The East Midlands IRC qualifiers for the Tristars and Youths require the kids to participate in two open water events starting with Mallory Park on 4th May.
I'm reluctant to let my kids participate in open water competition until they have at least had a practice session in open water and have proved themselves to be safe doing it.
The event on the 4th therefore seems ridiculously early for a kids open water event but I thought I'd ask in case anyone was aware of somewhere in the region that kids could visit to practice open water swimming between now and May 4th!

Watermead and Bosworth are available from the same time i.e. 2nd May, unfortunately that means you'll only get one session in before the race but it's better than nothing. (it is against the rules to swim when the water temperature is less than 14 degrees which is why the sessions start in May.

With regard to Watermead, the risk assessment does not currently cater for juniors whereas Bosworth is already set up. I am not aware of any proposals to get Watermead available to juniors, if this is desired it will have to come through the junior section.

There is a form to fill in before you swim at Bosworth, please seehttp://www.spanglefish.com/1485triclub/index.asp?pageid=101411

For those wishing to swim at Watermead you MUST be a member of Leicester Tri Club and you will not be allowed to swim until you have joined and paid.

Yes 2nd May -30th September - check your email.

If anyone who wants to do open water swimming has not received an email regarding this please let me know as soon as possible (obviously I will need you email address too).

With regard to Mondays or Wednesdays we are waiting for a response from the members as to what they want SO GET YOUR FORMS BACK TO CHRIS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE PLEASE AND IN ANY EVENT BY END OF APRIL. For the time being I'd assume Wednesdays until further notice.

Thanks for your help on this one.
It seems utterly reckless that the East Mids have chosen such an early open water event to be an IRC qualifier for kids who have never been any where near open water before. For a sport that wants to be seen as 'inclusive' this seems a terrible misjudgement.
I shall look at getting to Bosworth on the 2nd May and will speak to Brian and the others at the Junior side to see what their thoughts are about going as a group.
Currently I think the youngest juniors should boycott the race on the 4th but others may be more sympathetic towards the organisers of the league.
Anyhow, thanks Beck and others for the info.
